I hope none of my friends on this board were affected by the hurricane Katrina which devastated so many in Louisianna, Alabama, Mississippi, and some of the surrounding states. I deal with people from all over the country and I have 3 people in particular who reside in New Orleans, that I have developed a close friendship with. Attempts to communicate with one friend has met with silence. His brother said he was trying to make it out of New Orleans, but couldn't get his business closed down in time and was trying to navigate the mass exodus as quickly as he could to join friends in Alabama. The last they heard was that he, his wife, and child were just East of Baton Rouge when the hurricane hit in force. Now they are waiting and praying. Today I received an email from a friend who is with family in Houston. His house and business are in New Orleans historic district. He said that the storm damage was severe but he didn't think his neighborhood had been flooded until he heard that a levee broke. Two of the pumps are broken but it doesn't matter because the water would be pumped into an already overflowing lake and go back into the streets anyway. The area where his home and his law office arelocated are both now under water along with 80% of New Orleans. Tne area is without power, water, or sewage which will not be restored any time soon. I just want to ask that those who were in this storm remain in our prayers. |

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the news tonight. I don't know what to say-- I've been pretty shaken up since seeing it tonight. I'm just praying for all those people. |

I have been keepign them in my prayers all day as well I am glad someone else brought it up here. It was really hard to see the images, I live in Ca and we worry about earthquakes but that is a rare thing, while yearly there are hurricanes I don't see how people handle living through that year after year. |

I have been in communication with my friends by email. They said to add to the problems of no water, food, sewage, looting, disease, they have waters that are infested with gators and snakes. Tulane University Hospital is fighting off looters who are after the drugs...etc. My one friend had this beautiful home in the historic district. He and his wife spent years restoring this house and it was gorgeous. It is flooded now, but he said he has his family and they are safe. Nothing is more important than that. My friend's brother still hasn't heard anything and he is concerned because neither he or his wife are answering the cell phones. The Phoenix heat is nothing after seeing this storm. |

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Storm victims were raped and beaten, fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as flooded-out New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. "This is a desperate SOS," the mayor said. This really upsets me how some people can add salt to ones wounds, is it not bad enough that most of these people lost everything they have worked hard for, only to have some sick individuals prey upon them, my God this makes me wonder what kind of society our kids will live in once they become adults, what will our grandchildren have to look forward too?My heart goes out to all those throughout the world that are experiencing one form of heart ache or another. Say perhaps we can all do our part to instill or pass on good deeds, perhaps the next time you are at a toll booth pay for the car behind you, or let the person with the whining child bind you at the grocery store go ahead of you, sometimes it the little things that remind us there are still plenty of good people out there.

IT's funny you metion that, I actually work for Starbucks, (great benifits and they work around school schedule plus pay weel for supervisors) The other day we had a guy come through the drive through and the girls asked me what to do he wanted to pay for the order for the person behind him, so I allowed him to it was forlike 4 drinks and he paid cheerfully, so the next car was so happy he paid for the next persons drinks, it lasted for about eight cas it was really nice to see people do somehting for someone they dont know. Lex already called me from school to see how she could help and I said we could send some money to the red cross so she said she would send part of her brithday money to help out, it was so sweet. |

The situation is pretty desperate in New Orleans right now. Desperate people do awful things sometimes. In New Orleans the statistic of people who are living at or below poverty level is very high. I think I heard it is around 40%. Many of these people who lost everything had no insurance so they will not recover anything. They had little before and nothing now. The conditions in the area are pretty desperate and people are hot, tired, hungry, without water or a place to stay. I don't think any leniency should be given to anyone who is hurting others, but those who are taking food to survive without hurting anyone else...well that is different. The people there are in my prayers. My friend still hasn't heard from his brother and he is very concerned. |

The media are already making it a spectacle. I couldn't believe it... I saw this just a while ago. They were playing a SONG while showing the devastation. Do we need musical accompaniment to enhance the experience???There is talk that the relief efforts are slow because of the population in need. I hope and pray with all I am that supplies are not being delayed or rationed because the majority of victims are of color and are poor. Things like that make me embarrassed to be white sometimes. |

I have been watching the news from over here and it makes me cry to think of all the people left homeless or worse, but what really gets to me is how we treat each other in times of need. The lord must look down and wonder why he bothered with us at all. My neighbour has a sister there and can not get word from her, and is so worried. Our prayers are with them all.x |

I can tell you first hand that the delay in the rescue efforts has nothing to do with the color of people's skin. There is an immense amount of crime in the area. They had to halt an evacuation of a hospital because of sniper fire. A group of people were trying to steal the vehicles. From what I heard from my friends and from the news there are two primary delays 1)wild life issues and 2) the crime and anarchy that is creating a life threatening situation for the people sent to help. Rescue boats have to be cautious because some people are trying to hijack the rescue boats at gunpoint. Then there are the wild life issues such as aligators and .uuugh! ...poisonous snakes are only a couple of the issues there. This is a mess and I heard that anyone who shoots with the intent of killing or delaying a rescue is to be shot on sight. As for the musical news, do you really think we have seen an end to media exploitation of this? Soon Michael Jackson will write a song, then there will be an album...who knows.. maybe a concert. Give it a week or two. Personally, I think Michael Jackson should loan them his boat and donate his mini resort as a place for refugees to live instead. |
