Hey all! Wondering if anyone has had this problem. I have "temped" for 3 years now. Very tired of the "health care discounts" as opposed to real benefits. I finally got a Permanent job with benefits ONE month ago, at a Metal Fab Company (very small office) which it totally out of my realm (Secretary)and it's as an Office Manger. I was totally excited! That's "WAS". Since my 1st week. They've had 3 auditors from Board of Equalization visit and look at their Quickbooks and Payroll and Sales Tax records (which they conveniently misplaced). I keep getting collection calls from our suppliers and it's usually for small amounts that haven't been paid for 3 or more months. I am now getting calls from suppliers who threaten to "repo" some of the equipment!!! Also, the owner has his wife do the payroll and accounting (she freely admits she does not know what she's doing and laughs it off), and I get angry employees wondering WHERE their checks are (they sometimes get forgotten!). I have been under paid or over paid for most the pay periods. I confronted my boss and he ALWAYS..ALWAYS...says: "this reminds me of the story of....blah blah blah". Not really giving me an answer. They hired a Bookkeepper through Craigslist and she quit after 1 week. so far we've been through 3 in ONE MONTH! The books are THAT screwed up! I feel this job is a HUGE RISK and feel like "temping" again until the next permanent job comes along. Problem is, the interviewer looks at the resume and "THINKS" I only want to do temp work. I usually have to explain myself. Do you think I should just return to temping for the time being. I can really use some advice. Thank you and God Bless. Why don’t you let the temp agency know that you only want to do temps for hire positions? It’s a mater of time before this company goes under. I have come across people like that and I can grantee that when it does go under you will find there are no funds to pay you for your hard work. Not a position you want to be in. |

Wow Spongemom, this is a tough one. What a mess of a place you're working in now! I feel so bad for you-- I've been temping for over 3 years now (not by choice either) so I know how hard perm jobs with benefits are to come by. I had a similar experience-- I worked for about 3 days at a doctor's office that was just as screwy. It was a perma job, but with no benefits and I and my daughter would have starved on the wages. I was offered another temp job a couple of days after getting that job. The temp job paid 3 times more! I hated going back to the uncertainty and lack of benefits of the temp job, but really had no choice. I don't know about your job. It kind of seems like you're on a sinking ship, but then again they've been doing this-- and surviving-- for years? Do you have enough temp opportunities to ride this one out-- and does it pay well enough to make up for the hassles? If the owners are that messed up, it's not likely that any of the staff will be able to straighten them out. I guess the question is-- Is the chaos and uncertainty more secure than temping? I know the benefits are so important-- but do you think this business may go belly up? |

I'd like to jump in with my two cents' worth on this one because the business you have described is in serious financial trouble and it will only be a matter of time until you have been left with a month or more of outstanding wages, no benefits, and no job. If I were you, I would find another job, temporary or otherwise, as soon as possible.Your description of office happenings mirrored my ex-husband's business which of course went bankrupt, had its assets seized, and has been investigated by Revenue Canada leaving both partners facing jail time for tax evasion. Trust me, the more distance you put between yourself and these people, the better off you will be. Good luck and be sure to look out for yourself first. |

thanks everyone. I have expressed (to the temp agencies),my desire for temp to hire or direct placement, but they always tell me they don't have any and if I want to work, I should take what they give me. Geez, what a cheesy mentality! But hey, beats unemployment, and I think they KNOW that too. As for my current position, they got a VERY BAD letter from the Franchise Tax Board. How do I know? Aside from my seeing the envelope...my boss just about turned PURPLE! a few "expletatives" later, he went home. Hmm...(soap opera organ music) tune in tomorrow! I put my resume out there and so far, I've been called for 3 interviews. Yay. Hopefully things will look up. Again, thanks everyone. [This message has been edited by spongemom (edited 04-24-2006).] |

Hello, i agree with all that has been writen. I think you should get out now, when they go down you do not want to be with them.If you had worked for them for a long time i would say try and help out but as they do not seem to be able to sort themselves out why should you take the flack for them. Something good will come your way in time. Take care . -x-x- |

OOOOOOOOHHH!This little "troll"....my boss asks me to retrieve a Purchase Order for him from 2 weeks ago. It's been filed so I had to dig for it in their SORRY state of a filing system. I get the Order (SEVERAL PAPERCUTS LATER!) and he says: "If you were a dog, I'd say Good Dog"...then he says: "that was a good fetch"! I almost told him to suck canal water through a straw..(actualy worse than that, but I won't repeat it here). I THOUGHT I was over-reacting because I was kinda dumfounded. But my co-worker said "that was DEFINATELY an insult". Now I KNOW...I have to really get out of there fast! I have 2 interviews next week. Wish me luck. |

Actually, I GET TO TOMORROW! I got a Facilities Coordinator (permanent) job starting the 15th of this month....unfortunately it only leaves me in a sticky position leaving a 1 week notice instead of 2 weeks. This job has all the "bells and whistle" benefits for my little girl so I am NOT going to miss this boat. It's hard to get into this company so if they need me...I'm there! I guess that "Blue Meanie" of a boss will have to balance his financial stuff all by him self...awwwww. |
