Help! I have 2 job offers sitting before me: one is the doctor's office job... they want to train me to be their office manager (or, that could be translated into I'd be the only office worker-- stretching myself very, very thin). That could mean okay money later on, but right now the pay is so-so.

The second offer is with the local pharmaceutical company.... for twice the pay! But here's the kicker... it's a 6-month assignment and then I'll be right back where I am now-- no job come spring!

What do I do? Take twice the money and pray for the best or take the permanent job and hope for frequent raises?

Why oh why oh why can't this get simpler?

I want a real job with real benefits! The doctor's office gives a monthly cash allowance for "benefits"-- I suppose I could buy my own health insurance. Of course, the temp job offers no benefits... no sick leave, and the likelihood of being hired permanent is scant...this company doesn't typically hire its contractors.

Do any of you have health insurance that you buy independently? If so, who are you using? Thanks guys.... I need your feedback.

THat is a tough one. I would almost take the doctors because it is the "safe" choice. But, then again I am not one for always making the safe choice. Are you going to be happy at the doctors office? Or are you going to be able to save the extra money from the doctors office to hold you over until you find a new position once that one ends.

Have you ever thought about a rep for somehting like Baush and Lomb or a different contact lens company? I have a friend who works for BAush and Lomb (sure I spelled that wrong) she said they are always looking for reps with sales expr. and the pay is really good and they offer her benifits.

Good luck sweetie

The job with the Pharmaceutical Co. will offer you invaluable experience in a field you really want to be in. Since you know it is temporary, take the job and immediately being sending out resumes. When companies see that you are already doing the job on contract, it could open up more opportunities for you. Good Luck in whatever you decide.

I have to agree, just from your previous posts you seem so much more interested in this field than the doctors office. You know hte old saying do what you love and the money will follow. I think the idea to send take it and start sending resumes out immediatly.

I don't know what to do. The bigger problem is my divorce... which is on hold until I get permanent pay with benefits. I have enough health issues that not having health/prescription coverage would be disastrous. My ex has agreed to wait to finalize the divorce until I secure my own health coverage. He agreed to that a year ago...he typically changes his mind without warning.

Even though the money is good, these temp assignments keep me in this holding pattern. I can't tell you the despair I felt when I was literally escorted out of the building the day that last assignment ended. I knew I was facing what I had been doing for 2 years... searching for work during and between temp jobs.

Grace, Wouldn't office management experience be great? I'm wondering if it'll open more doors than technical writing. While the latter may be more lucrative (not necessarily more interesting or fun), there are so few jobs and the competition is incredible. Bottom line with pharma companies: I don't have a scientific degree, so I'm not going to land those high-paying medical writing jobs.

I am so confused! The only real lure to the pharma co. is the pay---and this is tough as broke as I am! I think I'd enjoy the doctor's office job more... I'd interact with people instead of complete isolation in a cubicle staring at a computer the entire day.

Oh-- then there's this. My child support is based on our respective incomes. If I keep getting temp jobs... which in this case there were 5 months of no income between... I am going to be assigned an earning capacity based on these temp jobs. In the real world, in a permanent position, I wouldn't make nearly as much (and I've been told as such by the pharma co). The hourly rate is jacked up so the temp agency gets their cut. So, I would be assigned an earning capacity that is way higher than reality-- and my support would be cut accordingly. Then, there I stand without enough to live on. If I take a job that is more in line with permanent reality, the court will look at that (if I haven't already dug myself this high-paying illusory hole).

I appreciate your help in this! I am so stuck.

The office management experience would be very good. Medical office managers do very well and if it turns out that you don't like it there are a lot of networking opportunities through the Dr office too!
I tried tech writing once. Finished one assignment and swore I would never do it again. Good money but BORING!! I am not cut out for accounting, computer programming, tech writing or anything that limits me to a computer for company all day.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your decision.

I think I've made up my mind. I'm going to take the doctor's office job. I just can't stomach the thought of another temp roller coaster ride at the end of 6 months.

And YES, technical writing is BORING!! It was hell sometimes spending the whole day... often for days at a time... without interaction with people. I spent 2 1/2 writing from home-- all by my lonely self-- I need to be meeting people!

I think this opportunity with the optician is going to be really interesting. They want to train me in all apspects of the optical world. It'll be neat! I am pretty excited to start work on Monday.... busy inventorying clothes, tiny bit of shopping, etc.

Wish we could all pop a cork and celebrate!

Optician's office? OK, now you are talking about a business I understand. My ex is an eye Dr. and owns a couple of optical businesses. There is a tremendous amount of opportunity in this field, from becoming certified as an optician to optical sales. A tremendous amount of network opportunities and the opportunty to meet a lot of opthamologists and pharmaceutical reps. The money is in optical sales but you need to know the day to day optical stuff first. Also, it would be advantageous to learn the medical billing part of this. The billing skills will also create opportunities for other career choices that pay well with great benefits.
Good Choice! I think you will like it.

Grace,

Thank you for the information. It sounds as if there are a lot of opportunties here! This optician sells high-end eye wear, so I guess it's even better.

my favorite part was that he let us buy everything at cost, So I got many pairs of sunglasses for really cheap! I got a 400 pair of calvin klien rimmless for $50 it was a great deal and he worked with the post op for a lasik surgeond office so I got my laski surgery done for umm oh $0 great perk, it was at a nation wide company that did Tiger Woods surgery they charge like $4000!
The opicians made great money and got commision on thier sales. I did pretesting stuff for the doctor and contact lens dispensing and training. So I didnt get commision but it was a good learning expereince.

I still don't know if I made the right decision about these 2 jobs! I am so stressed about this... I started at the doctor's office Monday. You'll love this-- the doc's wife was going to talk with the doc about pay and she hasn't yet even told me what I'll be earning! I let it go yesterday and today hoping that she'd be pleased with my potential and decide with her husband to increase the pay from the original offer (they did agree to increase it-- just don't know how much yet).

I'm just so torn.... I think the doc's office is going to be crazy-busy for such little pay. The doc's wife sounds impossible to please, makes racial and social status remarks (I hate that!!), and criticizes all the other staff behind their backs. Honestly, I don't know if anyone could please her. Plus, I was told I'd need to work late on Mondays and-- oops-- she slipped Weds. eves on me today, too!

I haven't declined the pharma writing job yet. I asked the recruiter to try and find out the possiblilty of that becoming a permanent position, but I suspect predicting that will be hard.

Do you guys think I'm making a mistake taking the doc's office job? With neither job offering benefits, the way I see it I'm screwed either way.

Do any of you buy your own health insurance?

The court ordered that I provide insurance for Reagan. I got her an individual plan through Blue Cross Blue Shield. It costs $94.68 a month. It is a pretty good plan--it is either 80/20 or 90/10, I can't remember. I would def. look into it.

On a side note, doctor's wives are the hardest people to please. They are all horrible in the work environment. I worked at a vets office for 2 years. When I got preg. his wife said "Just cut back her hours, she isn't going to be here much longer anyways!" She was awful. Trying to run the office from home---just awful, but the work was fun and the pay was pretty good.

Good luck, I think you made a good decision.
Look at it this way, you have a permanent job at the doctor's office, and if you don't like it or want more pay, you will at least be working while you are looking again.
