dwmaestro Member	posted 10-07-2005 01:40 PM I am new to this forum and new to all this. I have a friend who is married with two children. A daughter from his wifes' previous marriage and a son from the two of them. I am the Godfather and said I would try and find some info out for them. The daughter is 12 and would like to take on the last name of her stepfather like her mother and brother. However, her father is still in the picture(persay) and will not sign over any acceptance. I had heard that if you only added the name on with a hypen you would not need the other parents' permission since their last name was still there. Is there any truth to this and how would they go about doing it? Thanks!

chngCSlaws Member	posted 11-27-2005 12:11 AM Hi- I have check this out with the records office at our county courthouse in NJ. There is a long process and the packet they provide is really extensive. The cost for changing the name is aprox 800.00. The daughter may have some rights of her own that she may want to consider. Also, our family court has a mediator and perhaps this could be mediated fo the child and her bio-father. Good Luck
