As a single parent, I am barely making my bills thus far. The dentist dropped a bomb on me that left me in tears for the past two days. I am going for a second opinion today. The dentist claims I need two dental implants-Bone grafting and restoration-- Total cost between him and a surgeon$8000.00. ( not paid at all with my insurance). I also have the potential of 6 more teeth in the next 5 years needing the same- making the total cost in my mouth close to $50,000.00

Does anyone have experience with partials or dentures -good or bad? to help me make my decision? I cannot afford the cost of the implants but my insurance will pay half of a denture or partial- but cosmetically and comfort is alsp important to me. I am very young in my early 40's- I don't want to look like a 80 year old.

I am a surgical dental assistant for a periodontist. He specializes in dental implants.

Financially, yes, dentures are cheaper but they don't last and are very uncomfortable. You will eventually have to replace the denture adding additional cost to the once 'cheaper' option of a denture/partial.

Of all the patients coming through our office, I have yet to hear a customer complain at the finished outcome of a dental implant. There are numerous dental insurance companies now that have added dental implants to their plans. We have even had patients come through who went with the denture or partial initially and then changed their minds later on and have said they wish they went with implants in the first place.

In the short term, it's more expensive to place implants but in the long run, it's well worth it.

Absolutely go for a 2nd opinion! I would recommend it to anyone. Call different offices as well and see if you can get a 'quote' as to what it would cost. I know in my office, if you call and say you're needing a 2nd opinion, the dentist will most usually give a free consult with the hopes you will go with his office for treatment. Do your homework!

Good luck!

I have very soft teeth that break easily. I have also had several root canals that left those teeth in need of crowns. The estimate I got for four crowns was $3500. My insurance wouldn't cover it. Last Feb I was on vacation in El Salvador with a friend who is from there. I had all my dental work done there. It cost me $2400 Canadian. I had 9 crowns done and a permanent bridge put in where I had two molars missing. In Canada it would have cost me upwards of $10,000 to have the same work done. (if not more)I would have never been able to afford that. I would not hesitate to go out of the country again if I needed a lot of work done.
