Well long story short this year has sucked the life out of me. I used to be outgoing, optimistic, fun. I used to have a life! With my classes getting harder and Lex being gone most of the week, I without realizing it started slipping further and further into a shell. With that came no engery, pretty much work, school homework and then turn the tv on. I hated cooking for myself, it reminded me that she was gone, so I ate out pretty much every night. So in the last year I have gained 20 pounds, gotten so depressed it is hard to get out of bed and this semester I can 't even seem to get my homework done.
So, after talking to my doctor and making sure there wasn't actually a problem. He said he didn't feel i was "clinically" depressed, just stressed and sad, and to try St Johns Wart, plus to make sure I take my vitamins. So, I hit the grocery store, bought healthy food, have been taking my vitamins and the sjw. Been to the gym 3 times in the last 5 days. And trying really hard not to slip into old patterns, part of the self esteem issues that are depressing me, is the weight. I weight 15 pounds more now than I did when I was 9 months pregnant. And it has been in less than a year.
Now I just need a friend around here to work out with. I thought about joining LA weight loss or something but can't really afford it.
SO hopefully, just working out eating right again and taking somehting will help lift me out of this funk.
Side note, haven't had any sugar since last Tuesday, ate a little tiny one bite brownie at work last night and only ate half of it and it made me feel ill. I guess it is good. I will miss chocolate

Good luck to you! you'll do it! eating healthy and exercise is the key. I should
practice what I preach. I have been doing
the walk away the dvd and I love it. It's
going to take time and I know i'll lose
inches 1st. Just keep at it and when the
going gets tough kick it in the butt!
We can do it......................

Have you considered Curves? It's an uplifting atmosphere and you'll meet lots of nice women.
I walk and run and just eat healthy food. Sometimes I slip and have chips or chocolate but it's okay if you do that just once in awhile. Keeping active will help because you will not only lose weight but you will feel so much better. Sometimes I'm so tired and stressed after work and then I go out and walk or run or do my weights and I feel SO much better mentally when I'm done. Good luck!! I hope you can find an exercise partner because that really does help too.

I think I will join everyone here. I still have about 15-20lbs that I have been having a hard time losing since I had my daughter---almost 2 years ago. I still call it baby fat just for my own piece of mind, but I know other people are thinking "how long is she going to consider that 'baby' fat--there has to come a point where its just fat.

I think the complex we moved into has a work out room. I will start there. I had to give up my memership to the YMCA about 5 months ago because I couldn't afford it.

Good luck to all!

How old are you? I turned 35 this year and my metaolism just stopped. I didnt think I could get fat but I thought wrong..lol I have had the same problems, depression, work, kids, classes and I put on 10 pounds this summer.. People keep looking at me like they cant believe it.

I have been setting little goals for myself during the day to keep myself going. Instead of making a mental list before I get up in the morning I take one thing at a time so I can get out of bed. I get the kids to school. Then I think shower and do it. If I start to get depressed and think about laying down I do something outside of the house like go to the grocery store. It works, dont think to far ahead and set little goals that you can accomplish and then think yah me I did it and pat yourself on the back. I am going to the ymca, you can get financial aid Its so hard, dont give up. Now if I could just write this stupid stupid paper due tomorrow...aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

I used to get up at 4am and run or walk every day for 45 minutes before work. Three years ago I took a different job which was farther away and I had to be at work at 6am. Getting up early to walk wasn't feasible so I tried walking at night. At that time my son played hockey and I had a pretty full schedule and a lot of stress with my new job so I often found myself eating on the run and working through lunches. I gained 25 lbs, went up 2 dress sizes, and my energy level went way down. In the last few months I have been reclaiming my life and one of the things I do is to exercis every other day for 45 minutes. I usually walk/run or ride my bike but I can tell you that even though I haven't really dropped any pounds, I lost some inches and I feel sooo much better. I will never stop taking care of myself again and even if I am never a size 6 again I will at least feel good about myself. Too bad we don't live closer, we could all do something together!

THere is no Y close to us but we have a small gym at my apt, so I have been using the treadmill and weights, not so worried about losing pounds as much as inches. It is amazing how that 20 pounds can kill your self esteem. Well just got my paper ripped to shreds by my proffesor so I am off the make dinner and rewrite the stupid paper.

I went to the doctor last week for a checkup-- I've gained 8 pounds since I sprained my knee in July-- and I was packing a few I didn't want before then! I haven't been able to fit into any of my clothes all summer--- I've been literally wearing the same pair of blue jean capris all summer. I couldn't afford new clothes.

I too had to cancel my Y membership because of money. I used to like to swim laps-- and boy, that gets the weight off. I have a treadmill in my basement, which I really like (I just haven't been able to use it until this knee heals--which it has and I'm walking again).

The pounds sure do creep up. I have never gone into fall this heavy before. I'll really have to watch it during the holidays!

I applied for financial aid at the Y. It was helpful. My monthly dues were $45.00. That is probably a lot cheaper then the reg. rate, but still too expensive for me.

Here’s a site that might help, check out the activities section, there are people always looking for workout partners, sports groups looking to complete a team oh and yes you will also find some strange request on this site too. You can even post stating that you are looking for a workout partner. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/

Since I have been playing basketball at our parks and recreation center I have been feeling rejuvenated. Talk about a workout. Not only am I interacting with adults I am playing a competitive contact sport that gives me a great workout and you have people on the sidelines cheering you on. What more can I ask for?

You should look into your local parks and recreation center I am sure they can help you find some free or reasonably priced activities that will give you a great workout. http://www.cityofsacramento.org/parksandrecreation/recreation/sports.htm Click on adult leagues.

As for not wanting to cook for one, are you kidding? When I find myself alone I take advantage and make myself a nice healthy dinner salmon, veggies, salad, and a glass of red wine, put on some soft jazz, and read a good book. Pamper yourself you deserve it.

I also found it very rewarding to volunteer my time coaching. I try to do as much as I can to lift my spirits, and I can’t tell you what a great feeling it is to hear a bunch of kids calling you coach.

Check out your local High schools or collage to see if they have a swimming pool, my daughter’s high school has an Olympic size pool and it only cost $1.25 for adults and free for kids. They also have water aerobics. Listen as a single mom on a budget I have check high and low to find activities that my kids and I can join that won’t put a strain on my pocketbook.

Good luck!

Hey Lisa what part of CA are you in?
Anyways, I used to love just cooking for myself, but after a year the newness of it just kind of wore off, now it is kind of boring. And lex is a great eater so anything I would cook for myself salmon, veggies whatever I cook with her anyways
I am starting to feel a little better lifting out of my fog a little bit it's helping that I have finally narrowed my list of grad schools down to 8 which ssince each one only take 8 sutdents is a pretty good number. So Next year I will either be in AZ, MAryland, IN, OH, St Louis, CO, or DC. (az has two I am applying to)

I live in Northridge, part of the San Fernando County and good ol Los Angeles District. If you’re ever in this neck of the woods stop by.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. I think we all get into a blue funk every now and then.

That reminds me. My daughter was a US swimmer and quit her 3rd year of University because of schedule conflicts. So, she was telling me she missed swimming and being active. She went to the Y and volunteered to coach or teach a swim class and water aerobics. They contacted her old coach and ended giving her a part time evening job with pay as assistant coach on their swim team but I she mentioned that the Y has a lot of different activities. If you can't afford the fees, offer to volunteer to help with a sport a few hours a week. It keeps you active and lets you meet people too. In Arizona it is only $30 a year to me a basic member which allows you to take the classes and $40 a month to use all of the facilities.
We all get in that awful state sometimes. I was in it for a while too. Once we take the first steps to pull ourselves out of it things get better quickly.

mommyof2-- thanks for the advice. My daughter's high school has a pool. I'll check in tofind out about drop-in policy/rates. I only want to swim a couple times a week and then use my treadmill and pilates at home. I was paying $65 a month just for pool access at the Y.

I too love to cook when I'm alone (well, I'm sure it would get old ALL the time). I find I indulge in really healthy dishes and good wine. And I love to read while I eat... not something you do in any company.

I've cut back my portions this week and am walking the dog twice a day (wasn't supposed to walk her at all before my knee healed enough), so I should see some weight drop before too long.

My little Holly poodle sure loves the increased walks!

well made it to the gym 5 times in two weeks, but that is more than I have made itin the last year. Been eating healthy and choosing, dreid cranberries and almonds to snack on instead of chocolate and chips.
HAvent checked to see if I have lost any weight or inches yet, I was told you just get discouraged if you do it the first 4 weeks.
