One thing that really works is breastfeeding your baby. If you are doing that, you can rest assured that this is the one time that your body is burning stored fat. If you aren't breastfeeding now, then try and stay active and eat healthy. That's really how it works. It's hard work, and you really can't do one without the other and expect results. You just need to decide to do it, then do it, and do it everyday. Walking is excellent, and you can put your baby in the stroller and go--outside at the parks, or inside at the malls when it's cold out, just walk, walk, walk. And smile. The smiling helps!

Eat lots of veggies and whole grains--brown rice, bulgar, cous cous, kashi cereal,--fruit is good.

There is a book called "The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss" by John McDougall, which works, but it's pretty drastic. It was hard for me to stay on it, but it does work, and quickly. If you don't have a whole lot to lose, that may work for you. It's a pure vegan diet--no meat, eggs, cheese, milk, fish, or poultry, no oils or high fat soy is allowed. So you really need to get creative with your cooking, which can be time consuming, but the book also has recipes. I haven't tried any. I don't use recipes per se, I just wing it in the kitchen, and I've come up with a couple I really like, and my 3 year old likes them too. If you are interested in this, let me know and we can talk more. I plan to get back on this very soon, as I still need to lose some weight. Mine is mostly marriage weight though, not baby weight!

There is also a "McDougall Program" that allows more stuff, but weight loss is slower. I found out about this at the vegsource.com site. There are true-life stories there which can give you the push you need to get started.

If you are breast feeding, I think you should ask your doctor before trying any particular diet. I think you need an extra 500 calories a day if you breastfeed your baby. So don't limit your calories too much.

Good luck.

Marcy,
I've been on Weight Watchers for about 2 months now and have lost 15 lbs. It's pretty easy to follow and I find it's something that I can stick with over a long period of time. You might want to give it a try. Other than that I'd just say get some exercise and cut back on portion size, that's always been my problem anyway.

Good luck.

Moderation, diet and excesize of course but there are some tricks that work. Try this - NO EATING AFTER 7pm. It's simple and it really works. Tons of studies have proven that meals late in the day add more weight than earlier ones. Also you'll wake up with an appetite which is good, just eat the right stuff for breakfast.

Do you work out? Do you think you might like working out? If you don't work out and are the type of person who enjoys it, SCREW DIETING and find the time to get to the gym. For every person who has lost weight on one of these programs that are being peddled, there are 10 more who have gained all their weight back, couldn't stick with it, or have otherwise been unsuccessful (okay, so I just pulled that number out of my head...all I know is I know a lot more unsuccessful, unhappy dieters than happy ones).

Working out and being aware of what you fuel your body with is THE BEST way to lose weight. Immediately after working out most people notice they don't have an appetite. Because they aren't ravenous or craving anything, they can make better choices about what they plan eat (this doesn't require counting calories or measuring things...it's simply about being in a healthy mindset and knowing a turkey and advocado sandwich is better for you than a hamburger and fries). Increased muscle mass speeds your metabolism. And, of course, if you USE more calories than you take in, you'll loose weight. Why go on a diet (and feel deprived and tired...not to mention obsessed about food) when you don't have to?

Are there things about your eating habits YOU think you can improve on without depriving your body of what it needs?
