Is anyone interested in starting an online fitness support group, or know of one in existance. Being a single parent and finding time to take care of ourselves is hard enough. Maybe words of encouragement, ideas for creative fitness outlets, healthy and quick meal ideas, etc. would help. |

Yes, I'd be interested in adding to this file...especially if it includes "mental fitness" HA! The quick meals is good thing, too. A quick meal in our house is usually a Healthy Choice microwave dinner. I'm currently trying to get motivated into starting my exercise routine again...Finding the energy and a steady time is the problem. Any ideas? |

This is a great chain to start!!! I haven’t heard of any groups like this, but it's a healthy idea for sure. I know for myself, even with having full custody of my son and working a full-time job - I have to find the time to exercise, work-out, release. It's crucial for my own sanity. Eating healthy is too. I'm fortunate to have a workout facility at my place of employment... so that helps. Here are a few tips that I can offer. I know that I personally want my son to eat healthy lunches, so... I make him healthy lunches. And while I’m busy making him one I make myself one too. I saves me money!!! I buy fruits like cantaloupe, apples, pears, grapes, strawberries, pineapple, and diced peaches. I also make him sandwiches with cheese, mustard, mayonnaise and lunch meat. Some days we do PB&J though... what a break those days are. And... leftovers.. I've found that making simple healthy dinners at night, leaves for simple healthy lunches the next day. Things like pork chops, sweet corn, and mashed potatoes. Or steak, green beans, and rice. Chicken is pretty easy stuff too, with some sweet peas, carrots, and potatoes. Instead of keeping sweets around the house, I try to keep more sweet fruits, vegetables, and fun snacks around that are good for both of us. For fun fill a celery stick full of peanut butter, and put raisins along it and call it "ants on a log" - it' surprisingly good and good for you too. If I can’t find time to work out during the day – I make myself do sit-ups and push-ups at night before bed. It sure helps keep me feeling and looking good. Hope this stuff helps. – And thanks for starting the topic Froggie!!! |

I am so good at putting things off. After working a 12 hour night shift, and taking care of my 3 y/o I don't feel like doing anything (I'm also good with excuses!). But man have I grown in the last 3 years, ha! So I've decided to add exercise in gradually. Instead of driving to my mailbox, I now walk (my daughter loves splashing through the puddles). And when I go to the mall, I walk around the whole mall 4 times before I do my shopping. I have to think of creative ways of adding more activity into my daily routine, it is way to hard for me to work on one of those stationary exercise units (I get bored!). Does anyone have any creative ideas for exercise during the bad weather season? ********Yummy, Fast, & Healthy Recipe******* [This message has been edited by froggie77 (edited 12-12-2001).] [This message has been edited by froggie77 (edited 12-12-2001).] |

I'm just curious, has anyone out there heard of "Oxycise"? Have you ever used it? I took the "plunge" and bought the tapes and I actually love it! It only takes 15 min. a day and I do it right after I get out of the shower (waiting for my gel to set a little). But anyway, this is my 3rd week of it and I've lost 4lbs. and a total of 4 inches (from those "buldges" we don't like to talk about!) |

Has anyone tried working out with their child? My gym allows children over 13 to use all of the equip. (with adult supervision). My daughter is turning 13 this month and I was thinking about having us work out together. I would appreciate the advise of others who have tried this. |

Teach (I am too!) that "oxycise" sounds great! Where/how could I find that? I have a ballet stretching video I used before I got overwhelmed with my kids activity schedule. I have tried exercising in the evenings after dinner and homework but that is an inconsistent time because of the kids transporation needs etc. I tried to get up earlier in the mornings to exercise then but 4:30 a.m. was impossible to keep up. I have a hard enough time at 5:00! Anyone who manages to exercise regularly...does that magic 3 week window really work?? I've always heard that if you "force" yourself to keep at it for 3 weeks, you begin to feel the benefits and it gets easier...is it true? When I had a more flexible summer schedule, I exercised any time...now it's a chore. I think I could push myself if I could break it down to 3 weeks of "torture" for later advantage. I have a really easy fruit dip recipe... |

Michele- I think the site is oxycise.com but if you put oxycise in a search engine then it will come up. I saw it on TV and that's how I found out about it but I have also looked it up online so I know they have a site. I will let you know in about another week or so how I'm doing. I seem to have kind of leveled off and I'm not losing anymore inches or pounds but I want to stick with it for at least 6 weeks before I judge it too hard--I think that's how long it takes your body to adjust to something new. I do try to do it at the same time every morning and in the same way so that I can have fair and consistant results. Let me know if you do end up buying it and we can be each other's support! |

Diane and Collins, you guys have a great opportunity with an exercise facility or program at your jobs and being able to exercise with my son would be so great. I think St. Louis companies lack tremendously with assisting their employees build good fitness and health. Unless you know someone in one of the big companies like Monsanto or Anhueser-Busch, you rarely can apply for a job at those places, those companies do support their employees well. I will also look up the oxycise web page for more information, thank you. I would like to be a part of this forum also...I don't have any healthy recipes, but I like grapefruit in the morning, with some wheat toast, lately I've discovered I'm not as hungry through the day. But I reeeaaaalllyy need to shave off a whole lot from this body. I like to exercise in a class or on equipment, and I hate to say "but", but money, being tired at the end of the day and leaving my son at home alone at night while I exercise some place is not an option. It is so hard to motivate myself to exercise alone at home, but I know I have to try soon or my health will force me. [This message has been edited by Trekkie4Girl (edited 01-18-2002).] |

Wow! After reading a few of these posts I'm starting to feel spoiled and lazy! I have been looking for the right place to advocate YOGA and more YOGA! For 12 hour schedules, hellish and erratic working conditions, aches and pains (everywhere), Yoga is a wonderful tool. Its for everybody and you can even interest little kids (3-4 year olds) in it, even though their attention span is somewhat limited. And its also great for the non-atheletes---those of you who do 20 situps and get on the treadmill only to feel like you have been in a fight the night before the next day simply MUST try any type of Yoga! There are books, (harder to navigate for beginners), audio tapes and videos which I also recommend highly. Great topic and a much needed one, I noticed that alot of postings are located in relationships and dating---poo-poo! Its funny, when you are a relationship junkie and full time parent, the subject of to do or do not (in terms of dating, etc) seems to be forever etched and the issue of HEALTH and wellness for oneself seems low on the scale! If we can't keep fit physically, how are we ever going to get there mentally? I firmly believe that as single parents we need more strength and vitality to do our number one job! I'm going to check out Oxercize right now... |
